GERRI WILLIS, HOST: Only a matter of time, that’s what we said Friday, a matter of time until somebody seriously suggests Congress enact another stimulus bill. And like clockwork this weekend pundits and policy wonks filled the airwaves with ideas for another economic bailout.
Never mind that the first 787 billion in stimulus has failed to prevent jobless rates from soaring to nearly 10 percent, neither has it lifted GDP. Even the housing market has failed to respond to numerous programs to lift it out of the dumpster. I’m getting the feeling the only response Democrats know to any problem is to spend money.
But not just any money, your money, our tax dollars. When instead we should be thinking of ways to galvanize private industry to pick up the reins and start spending the trillions in cash CEOs are sitting on. I think we should ask Congress to take the Hippocratic Oath to first do no harm. But that’s just my “Two Cents” and this is THE WILLIS REPORT.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. That is the drumbeat coming from the left now that it is obvious our economic recovery, it’s just not there, it’s stagnant. That’s right a second round of stimulus is being floated and one of President Clinton’s most trusted advisers is the source. The question now is will the current president take the advice and how much long-term damage can more reckless spending cause? Peter Morici is the economist at the University of Maryland — Peter, welcome, great to see you again.

WILLIS: All right, I want to show you something that Laura Tyson said this weekend in an op-ed column she wrote for a newspaper. She said that we need a second stimulus. More state government aid. Remember we just gave 26 billion to state governments about two weeks ago. She wanted to extend unemployment benefits. And she says we need $1 trillion investment in infrastructure. And Peter, even you have said that investment in infrastructure gives you a big pay back. Does Laura Tyson have it right?
MORICI: Well I think it is a bit too late for that. You know the share of the federal government in GDP has gone from less than 20 percent to up around 27, 28 percent. I mean how much bigger does it have to be. The problem with socialism is sooner or later — what did Maggie Thatcher say — sooner or later you run out of other people’s money to spend. And that’s where we are. We simply cannot afford another failed stimulus package.
